Evaluation

Here is the subsiduary task of the advert for the documentry of my media coursework ...

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

When producing my media documentary I looked at several different documentaries to compare it to, these were mainly of "life" on bbc1 and different documentary programmes that have been on throughout the course of producing my documentary. The conventions of my media product that apply to a real media product is that of many conventions, for example, music, voice-over, captions and titles. At the beginning of the film extract there is an image of the world that turn on its axis and it locates london to kenya. This is realistic to a media product as it looks professional and well structured. Another typical convention of a documentary extract is that of a voiceover. This has been used in every documentary that i have researched into. For example the "life" documentary which is presented by David Attenborough. This documentary has a voiceover nearly all the way through it however David himself is in some of the scenes. This is different to our documentary as we have only a voiceover and no presenters, just some clips of the gappers talking to the camera. Therefore the convention of a voiceover is the similar to that of a typical documentary extract as it doesn't have a presenter.

When looking at the different documentaries i would focus on the conventions that they all had in common so i could incorporate some of them into my own documentary. This is as i wanted to make sure the extract looked as realistic as i could.

The things I picked up on from looking at other documentaries are how the title comes in and when it comes in, it doesn't always have to come at the begining. I also learnt how to make my documentary, double page spread and advert to look like real. I did this by always comparing them to others, seeing what they have and what they don't.

All the way through the media extract there is generally a voiceover or a soft music in the background. In our own documentary we had usually the noise from the clip of what is showing, for example the kenyans playing the music and the children singing within the clip. When looking and analysing closely the documentaries, we could see that when there was a happy and joyful scene they use minor keys and when there was a sad or an unhappy scene they use major keys for example when the shark jumped out of the water to catch the seal it was jumpy and edgy as although the seal was sacrificed for the food, the shark still got some food to eat, here they used a mixture of major and minor as there was both joyful and sadness in that extract.


How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

The main products and the subsidiary tasks work well together as they both compliment each other. If someone saw the advert or the double page spread for the programme they would be attracted to watching it as the adverts are so eye-catching. My advert and Double page spread together tell the audience what time , what channel, when and what my documentary is all about. Hopefully it intrigues the audience in and makes them want to watch my documentary.

The theme of a map has been used throughout the subsidiary tasks and the main product as we thought it was appropriate to what our documentary was about, the travelling of gappers from london to kenya. The map has been a background of both of the subsidiary tasks, and it was also shown on the product itself with a cgi world map that turned to locate the two destinations we were at. We tryed to find maps that where the similar colour to our background, which is cream that has an old effect. We carried on with the theme of maps, so on the double page spread there was a map of the world for the background and with a map of Kenya on the right side, and a map of England of the left, with an arrow going from London to Narobi, this is of simarlarty to the documentary extract, just on the paper instead of in the 3D form of video.


What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The audience feedback has been very helpful to the way that my main products and subsidiary tasks have been produced. This is as the main aim of producing them is to meet the needs of the target audience. Therefore any input and feedback they can give helps us to achieve this aim. Overall I am very pleased with the way in which the documentary turned out and how it has been produced. I think it all works really well and it links together in a professional manner. The double page spread and the advert were commented upon by fellow students and they said they both looked well structured and the information given in them was clear and to the point. I have never blogged, or done filming before so this coursework was a big challenge for me as i was new to it all. However i am really pleased with the way it has turned out as i am not comfortable with filming or blogging but i have taken to them rather well. All of the feedback that i have recieved from the documentary has been positive with the final product. However whilst going along the process of producing the documentary extract feedback wasn't always positive which is understandable as it is better to have something to work on and to work towards.

The things that i believe i would change about my main extract and my subsidiary tasks is that i would have had some proper photos taken for the advert and the double page spread as i had to use the photos i had already got from mine and selinas camera shots. This meant i had to pick some that reflected the experience in kenya but also looked remotely professional. I would also have planned my time out better as i believe i could have done more work on the actual documentary if i had the resources at home such as an apple mac computer.


How did you use the media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?

I used the media technologies in the construction and the research planning and evaluation stages of my media coursework in many ways. To make the actual footage for the video i used the programme imovie on the applemac computers. I find this easier to use on the newer computers than on the older ones as i found they were more up to date and they were easier to follow. I could speed the footage up, rearrange the order of it. I used the captions and the editing to incoraporate the captions within the footage which was quite confuseing but made it look good in the end. I also used the general technology of a video camera. This was to do the main filming of the documentry extract. I also used the microsoft word to produce my storyboards and making lists for the planning and researching for the documentry. This was very times consuming and is one of the most important parts of making a documentary or a film. You can filming for ever and do retakes but it's how you put it together that really counts and how it flows. It is also important not to bore the audience. I have learnt alot of different skills from using the different programmes on the computers which has helped me with the coursework.

Wednesday 25th November
Today we looked at the new apple mac computers with Mrs Fearnley and we found out that we are able to get up a 3D image of the globe which we can locate Gatwick airport (the airport we flew from) to Nairobi (the airport we flew to in kenya). It shows the route that we took so the viewers are able to see where the footage we took is from.

We also went out with Hanna to help her do her filming for her film

For the double page spread interview with have decided to interview Jones a camps international member of staff, who works with the community and gap year students to help with animal conservation.

On the first page of the double page spread with have decided to have a big picture with jones and some gap year students, then under the photo we will have a brief introduction of what Jones roll in the company (Camps international) and a general profile of him.
-Member of staff at camps international.
-Specialises in animal conservation work.
- Works three months a year at camps international, has another job.
-Family lives in Tsavo also.
-Earns 1000 kenya shillings a months, worth £16 pounds.
-Favourite animal is an elephant.
-Cousin was killed by an elephant, this changed Jones views on elephants dramatically.
-Has a very good relationship with gappers.
For the interview we will use pictures of us and Jones and other gap year student, animal conservation work and the projects we do to help.

After this on the next page we will start the interview, we have done a brief draft of questions that we have decided to ask Jones theses are

Planning
Thursday 25th June
As we cannot make a story board because we do not know what we are allowed to film in and around kenya, i have made a selection of shots that we would like to film while out there.

Planning Media Shots;
  • A variety of shots of the students at the elephant sanctuary with the elephants.
  • On Safari: animals, with the camera jolting to create an effect of the car moving.
  • Girls walking off the plane with their rucksacks with the Kenyan airport behind. (We could even cheat and film a plane coming into land that isn’t ours yet say it was ours)
  • Interviews of the gap year students (Kenya cam) to show their feelings and attitudes towards the trip and the way of life out in Kenya.
  • Building the schools and teaching the children, portrays a feeling of a community coming together and shows how strangers can get along and help each other.
  • Selina’s birthday celebration to show how they celebrate special occasions such as birthdays. Mrs Yeomans has said there will be some kind of celebration, Selina is excited and nervous about this but thinks it will be a great experience.
  • Shots of the children and the tribes: make them come up into the camera so they look intrigued and the audience can relate to the emotions they have.
  • Top of the mountain at sunrise, pan across the mountain to show the sunrise and the atmosphere that is up there.
  • Walking along the beach, white sand and bright blue sea, show the beach life with the stalls along it and the Kenyans selling their goods and getting along with their normal lives.
We need to be prepared to film anything unexpected, meaning we need to have our camcorder on us at all time. If this isn’t possible, then we need to have a stills camera.

More Research
Saturday 20th June
I have been doing more research on specific topics of the documentary for example the animal conservation that we will be involved in in Kenya.

This paragraph about the elephants show that there is much conflict between the humans and elephants;
If it were not for humans, elephants would rate among the most successful species on earth. Thirty years ago, the elephant population stood at a healthy 3 million. Today less than 250,000 individuals remain, with numbers expected to decline further due to human pressures.
The loss of habitat and the ivory trade have been the two biggest factors contributing to the decline in elephant populations. During the 1980's over half of Africa 's elephants had been killed, and the population was reduced by 700,000. This is due to the human and elephant conflict within Kenya.

Tuesday 23rd June
I have watched a few different clips of how the documentaries are filmed and the different camera shots, angles and movements are used within them. I analysed a selection off youtube http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Kenya&search_type=&aq=f and found that the main camera angles and shots and midshots or longshots and the movements are either pans or zoom in and out when focusing on the people and animals. I also analysed a clip from one of David Attenboroughs documentaries to see how he presents himself on the documentary and to listen to the voiceover on it; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0icoUFdxhQM I found that David Attenborough gets completely involved in the footage.

Thursday 11th june;
For my media A2 coursework I am to choose from a choice of 13 briefs.
For each of the briefs there is a main task and then 3 bullet points from which I am to choose two to produce for the end product.
Brief 1 is a music video
Brief 3 is a web pop-up
Brief 7 is a snippet of a documentary tv programme
All of these briefs appeal to me. However Brief 1 is similar to what I did in AS as for that I had to produce a music magazine, therefore I would prefer to work on something different. Brief 3 also sound interesting however the web pop-up may be difficult as I am not used to working with the different programmes that will be used to produce it. Also the school may not have the technology to do it. I would love to be able to produce something different and able to further my media experiences with different programmes and technologies however to be able to make the end product my best ability I think sticking to what I am comfortable with would be best. Brief 7 therefore is the one I have chosen as it is producing a documentary for a TV programme. I would enable me to further my media abilities as I haven't ever worked with moving image, yet I would feel comfortable with the filming as I have done editing before.
Included in brief 7 is; An extract from a new documentary TV programme, lasting approximately five minutes, together with two of the following options; a radio trailer for the documentary, a double page spread from a listings magazine focused on documentaries, a newspaper advertisement for a documentary.
The two subsidiary tasks I have chosen to do alongside the main task is a double page spread from a listings magazine focused on documentary and a newspaper advertisement for a documentary. This is as these are the two i am most comfortable with.

Wednesday 17th june;
The media coursework that i am working on is
an extract from a new documentary TV programme, lasting approximately five minutes, together with two of the following 3 options;
A radio trailer for the documentary
A double page spread from a listings magazine focused on the documentary
A newspaper advertisement for the documentary
In lessons I had to do a proposal for what I was intending to do for my media coursework. My classmate Selina and I have decided to work together as we were going to Kenya for a month with an organisation through school. This is to do community work, mountain climbing and working on different projects. The link here shows the sort of activities we would be doing there;

We thought that this would be the perfect opportunity to incorporate our media coursework into. It would give us an advantage as no-one would have the same as us as we liked the idea of it being completely different to what everyone else would produce.
For the proposal to rest of the group Selina wasn't here so I had to present our ideas to the group on my own, this was fine as we had discussed it and I knew what to say. I explained to the group that as we were off to Kenya, we decided to use it to the best of our ability and produce our documentary on that. The actual documentary would be on some gap year students travelling to Kenya and we would follow them and show the work they would do with the community and the animal conservation programmes. The main focus of the documentary would be to focus on how the gap year students would cope with the different culture and lifestyle of Kenya and how the animal conservation programmes work. Also we would focus alot on the wildlife conservation that happens out in kenya and how the different wildlife effects the communnities around them. We would try and see how sustainable the way that the people and animals live together is, or how it needs to be improved.
The feedback from the class and Mrs Fearnley was that the main ideas were really good but I would be pushed for time as we were off to Kenya on the 4th of July. Also we would need some main focus points to concentrate on as the month in Kenya is so filled with activities and projects that it would be impossible to film everything. This really helped as I then could feedback to Selina what was said and we could start working as soon as possible.

Research
Friday 19th June;
Today I have done lots of research about Kenya and what type of work and projects we will be doing in Kenya, this was done by going on the Camps international website and using wikipedia.
There are four main sections of the expedition, these are;
Wildlife which includes the safari
Ocean which includes going to the beach
Mountain which is climbing the mountain and mountain tasks
Community which includes working with the community and doing project work with them
This means that we can make the documentary split into these sections and the snippets of the documentary would be of these four main sections.

Alot of the work we will be doing will be with animals and the animal conservation, I researched on what this involved and as I was looking I came across some horrible photos. These were mainly of the snares that the poachers use and camps international try to reduce the snares and help the animals as the snare rip them to pieces and can cause death to the animals.
